Chapter 1:Pure Yoga Part I

Function of a Soul - Part I -Western type analysis

Souls have 3 main powers or functions inside it. These are

    1. Mind

    2. Intellect

    3. Sanskars or Samaskaras

These are not separate from the Soul, but, are different faculties or capacities of the same Soul.

Mind is associated with some of the basic functions like thinking or desiring or wanting. It is through the energies or powers of mind that it imagines and thinks about it. It is this thinking capacity which causes all the desires and ambitions and to experience them. Mind travels faster than the speed of light or the sound. Being so refined, it penetrates beyond the time and space and any boundaries.

The higher faculty of the Soul as we all know discriminates between right and wrong, or knowing it or Judging it or take a determined course of action. This is known as the intelligence faculty of the Soul. The further functions of the intelligence is to understand or rationalise or deal with any matter logically and arrive at reasoned arguments or answer—to make correct decision at the right time. People should be able to distinguish between the different functions of the mind and the intelligence, especially, when they deal with any situation in their day to day living. This will prevent them from making mistakes.

I like the simpler analysis of what Soul, Mind and Intelligence and Sanskars compared to the Philosophers or Scientists views which complicates understanding, making simple things more difficult to understand.

The scientific description of mind becomes dry as it does not include the real“ Spirit or the Spark ”which is part of the mind itself.

Functions of the Soul- Part II – eastern type analysis

Vrittis, Chitta, Sanskars and Memory are important functions associated with the analysis of Soul or Atma. In simple language, Soul is made up of Mind, Intelligence and Sanskars.

Vrittis

Vritti is simply stated a wave of thought or a whirlpool. They are tendencies which arise as a result of ignorance or lack of knowledge. Vrittis arise from the Chitta or mind. Vrittis help a person to develop or evolve. The function of the Vritti in the mind is to cause removal of the veil of ignorance surrounding objects. Different names are given to different vrittis in Indian literature. Like the mind virtti or the vivek vritti or the witness vritti, which really are relative experiences or differences in the analysis of mind stuff, which are really more for academic gymnasts than for practical people? I prefer practical experience is more real and useful rather than categorising them or compartmentalising vrittis because in real life one always meets across a cross section of vrittis rather than a particular type—known as splitting hairs. The externalisation of vrittis is because of sight, sound and habits. Instead one should undertake greater introspection which will yield a proper answer to our queries or problems.

Mind gets tired of these different vrittis or constant thought waves. These different options or imaginations are known as vikalp which tends to cause more problems in life. Mind gets stronger when these vrittis are destroyed or negated by a reasoned argument thereby eliminating it from the mind altogether.

Silence is the answer to these vrittis. Undertaking greater introspection in silent mode rather than in 5th gear or overdrive thinking will provide greater dividends and fruitful results. When the mind is fully controlled, these vrittis die or cease to occur.

Chitta:

Chitta is the mind stuff. It is the mental substance inside the Soul. Just as waves and bubbles arise from the Ocean, so also these Vrittis arise from the mind Ocean. It is also known as the sub-conscious mind. Much of the sub conscious comprises of submerged expression which has been put or stored away in the back ground.

The Chitta is like a calm lake and thoughts or Sankalp are like the waves upon the surface of the lake. All the waves arise as a result of names and forms. The conscious mind comprises of only 10 % of activity, dealing with one thing at a time to solve the problem in hand. However, the sub-conscious mind is much greater, comprising of some 90% of activity. What is not needed or not used is stored in the memory bank. It comes up in a flash at the time of need.

Memory:

Smriti or memory is a function of the Chitta or the sub conscious mind. The sub-conscious mind brings to the surface of the conscious mind during an act of Smriti or memory any relevant information needed to carry out a task. Sometimes one cannot remember a particular thing. The Samaskaras of a particular thing have sunk deep. The Chitta, which is the storage of Samaskaras and whose function is the memory, analyses, sorts out and then brings it to the surface of the conscious mind. Loss of memory can ensue for a number of reasons. Either though lack of observing Brahmacharya or chastity or stress ones memory may becomes blunted. One of the advantages of Yoga is that it helps to sharpen the intellect. The grasping power or Dharana can also be adversely affected by the use of the spirits.

Personal Experiences of Memory:

Because of intense jealousy from the sukshma layer, I have been a victim of this type of damage where this ploy is used to destroy people’s memory. Brahma, Shankar and KaliMaa have been responsible for this to me for over 10 years. Once Shivbaba advised me that Krishna had caused this problem in Mauritius of this problem which had badly affected my intelligence and numerous attempts were made to make me mad by the use of these evil techniques. However, Yoga is the only factor which has kept me going. If the Brain relay mechanism has a blockage with an evil spirit planted by black magic, then this prevents the efficient or sharp intellect, one’s memory may become blunted. I knew in and out of London streets. Yet, I felt I had forgotten many of the roads which I knew backwards. Permanent damage can result to the memory by these evil techniques. Maya will be dealt separately.

Spirits can block your normal or smooth functioning of the neuro chemical transmitters at the Pituitary Hypothalamus level. For instance while writing this chapter on Soul Consciousness, I felt very lethargic and sleepy during morning. I was informed of another soul which was present inside my brain which was the cause of feeling sleepy. I felt immediately better once this spirit was removed. The techniques of removing are beyond the scope of this book and are to confidential as the play is still live at the time of writing this book.

Every effort was made to stop me from writing this book so as not to reveal many secrets. It was AsliBhagwan who was my constant guardian angel in pushing me through to see to completion to expose to the World these secrets.

There are also powerful people in this World who can suck away the memory of people. They can extract parts of memories stored inside the brain of people. This can cause blank pages in the memory. Again, this sort of activity is to confidential to write about in this book. Jealousy is a big factor. Despite being Yogis or acquiring knowledge, many powerful people simply do not like someone else to rise above their heads. They spend more time bringing someone down from the ladder. This is why these people who have obtained some siddhis abuse their powers. Unfortunately, powers are also given by Devi-Devtas who are also involved in this treachery.

Sanskars or Samaskaras:

Both words denote the same entity. It has already been explained that Vritti or thought wave arises in the Ocean mind. It operates for some time. Then it sinks below the level of normal consciousness. From the surface of the conscious mind, it sinks down deep into the region of sub conscious mind or the Chitta. There it becomes a Samaskaras or an impression or a Sanskars.

The sub conscious mind or the un conscious mind or the Chitta are the same terms used synonymously. The seat of the sub conscious mind is cerebellum or the hind brain. One can recall past impressions or events or experiences to the minutest details which are stored in the sub conscious mind. The past is preserved even to the last detail it is never lost. The process of recollecting past Sanskars to the surface is called the memory or Smriti. The Soul transfers the impressions from it to the body’s relay (the brain) mechanism and coordinates activities of human body.

The memory of the specific experience springs from that particular Sanskars only which was formed out of that particular experience. This is recollected to the surface of the conscious mind to aid its identification or analysis. An object awakens or revives Samaskaras in the mind through external stimuli.

A Sankalp or thought arises subjectively from within, without a stimulus from outside. For example, let us take an example of an object such as a car. Repeating this word car brings to the surface the image of the car, which was stored inside from past experience. Then a thought is formed.

Sanskars causes Sankalp and Sankalp causes Sanskars (Swami Shivananda).

This is the most important sentence in understanding and eliminating the cause effect relationship between the two. This is an example of a tree and the seed analogy which both ShivBaba and Swami Shivananda talks about.

The useless or worrying thought process produces more vrittis or Sanskars on the surface of the mind which has no end and is like a bottomless pit. It is only by constant Yoga practice that past Sanskars are wiped out or burnt out in the Yoga Bhatti or agni. This is the fire which Shivbaba talks about to mould a soul into newly formed 24 carat gold full of Divine virtues as opposed to the Soul who is Tamopradhan and has very little shine or gloss and is contaminated with rust inside.

The forces of Maya play an important role in the fight between the positive and negative Sanskars which constantly interplay in the mind. When one tries to create a positive feeling or thought about a particular event, thing or a person, an equally negative forces of Maya will attempt to exert its influence and try and negate your positive thought which one wants to use to get out of the depressing mood. Out of the blue, Maya will produce thoughts or pictures which one had not even thought about to surface to cause a battle in the mind. The best way and the only way to eliminate the powerful forces of Maya’s role and interplay is make Maya your sevak. Then the forces of Maya will not oppose you. Instead they will assist you. Fight verses Sevak is an excellent point to remember.

I say this from repeated and personal experiences in having to face forces of Maya placed by outside people who do not want one to see Divine visions or who do not want one to communicate with God because of basic problems of human and Spiritual weakness of higher sukshma layer of beings or Devtas who are constantly watching your move. Fight between divine or virtuous sankalp verses vicious or viceful vicars is a constant battle to overcome.

All Sanskars co-exist in the mind. The vrittis leave behind traces in the mind. These traces are the Sanskars. From the Sanskars spring the memory. A Yogi can know about the previous life of a person from his stored Sanskars. It is like reading the stored blue print of the person.

One has to constantly stay on guard and battle against evil Sanskars which might be latent from previous impressions. When one meditates on God, then the negative Sanskars or Maya will attack you and try and change your mind or distract your mind from praying to God. Maya will inflict doubt in your mind.

When a new child is born, it has Sanskars, both good and bad, acquired from its previous lives which are stored inside the Soul. These give a head start with the new life. Along with these old impressions are added new Sanskars from the current life. The combination of the two helps to shape his future.

There is a record of all the previous Sanskars which are stored inside the Soul. That means all the different impressions of the past innumerable births. The Sanskars relevant to the new birth are handed over to the new brain which will help to sustain the new life via the Soul. That is why a physical death of a person is not the death of his ongoing Sanskars which continue its journey in the new life. However, some Sanskars will remain, whereas others will finish with the present life. Shivji clearly says that sanskars like being a Doctor or a Barrister will end and the person will have to start new all over again in subsequent lives. However, the divine Sanskars do remain in the memories which is acquired once one becomes devoted to Godly University in this life as the Souls only get one life to accumulate in their Karmic bank account. These accumulated credits will then last them throughout the Kalph, but certainly during the Ram Rajya and the Dwapur Yug.

It is important to understand the chain of events which produces the desires in human beings. From the mind arises Sanskars and from Sanskars arise vasanas which lead to desire to enjoy objects and an internal craving. Maya has her strength in the imagination or the Vikalps. Likes and dislikes arise in the mind. To achieve its desires, the mind will scheme to achieve or fulfil its desires.

What one has stored inside its Sanskars will emerge in that life. Therefore, if one has good deeds then this will translate into good thoughts and desires. Evil tendencies in life can be overcome if one has the right guidance. Positive attitude and approach to drive out negative Sanskars are possible by adopting the attitude I am a Soul and not a body. There are various ways to fight the different forms of Maya which tends to aggravate or accumulate negative Sanskars. These will not be discussed here. Suffice it to say Yoga, Meditation and undertaking benevolent deeds and obtaining people’s blessings all go towards increasing good credit into your account.

God says become like a lotus flower while engaged in your daily activities or actions or undertaking your Karmas. Despite doing the Karmic action do not become affected by the senses of your body, keeping your mind on him i.e. being a Karma Yogi and staying in that loving and detached frame of mind like a lotus flower which does not get affected despite staying in stagnant or dirty waters. This is shown as a simile in Vishnu’s double form of Laxmi and Narayan.

One needs to forget old World and old Sanskars to transform oneself into a Soul Conscious person. Body consciousness leads to false ego and arrogance. The Soul is weak and does not have any real power at the end of the Swastic Cycle. With that back drop,

Practical aspects of Soul or Atma:

Some important details of the soul are included as a direct result of my personal experiences about the soul. These experiences are not covered by ShivBaba in his knowledge and have been a learning experience in life. These are divine secrets revealed to me by Highest God during my daily meditation with him. The problem with the soul is that it is not seen with the naked eye. Here lie all its mysteries. Because one does not see it in the ordinary sense of the word, its hidden value is not appreciated by the masses.

Koran clearly says that the Soul cannot be seen. This statement alone explains the depth of the knowledge of the soul which is missing from the masses. Bible talks about the Spirit and the Holy Ghost. Whereas Gita talks about the knowledge of the Soul. Koran also mentions the mystery of the World in the form of an inverted tree. Gita also devotes a chapter about an inverted tree, although real information about this is entirely missing. Gita talks about the Kalpavruksh or the golden tree, whereas it is Ramayan which brings the inverted tree to life. Ramayan teaches Divine virtues in real life. Ramayan teaches human values and how to lead an ideal family life. It teaches 5 important tenets in life. These are

  • Satya or Truth

  • Prema or Love

  • Dharma or Righteous action or code of conduct

  • Shanti or Peace

  • Ahimsa or non violence

These are Divine virtues which are a real treasure to human beings.

Soul contains consciousness which manifests to different levels in different human beings. It is not that consciousness is Soul. So how can you see Soul? To do this the first lesson is to forget you are a physical body. To forget the physical body consciousness is the most difficult thing to do. It is easier said than done. Day and night we are associated with this body with which we perform all our daily functions. Entire life revolves around the human body. Increasingly, in the West the trend was to develop Rambo or Mr. Universe like muscles with plenty of gym exercises and steroids which help to pump up the muscles. This is also copied increasingly in India, especially aided by their favourite film heroes who are shown flexing their muscles on the screen, many of them are cowards when it comes to real life situations. All this does nothing but to send wrong signals to the watching masses. It is good to be physically fit. To play sports and to encourage sportsmanship is to be applauded.

I say to the interested readers that one can see Soul clearly. This appears as a small tiny silver shaped dot in the beginning. Like anything in life if you want to achieve anything worthwhile, one needs to work hard on it. People spend 10 yrs of their life acquiring basic qualifications which will theoretically allow them a chance to set foot on the first step of the ladder of their life. Yet, nobody wants to work hard in life. Everybody wants it readymade and easy on the plate. Increasing trend towards becoming overnight millionaires means constant drive and work towards extracting maximum out of human beings to achieve or perform.
